     Institute of O. V. Palladin Biochemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (the modern name of the Institute) was founded in Kharkiv in 1925 on the initiative and with the direct participation of Professor (in the future world-renowned academician) Oleksandr Volodymyrovych Palladin as the Ukrainian Biochemistry Institute of the People's Commissariat of Education of the Ukrainian SSR. Its official opening took place on November 9, 1925.

     Oleksandr Volodymyrovych Palladin was the Director of the Institute since the date of its establishment until February 1969, then he was appointed Honorary Director. Further directors of the Institute were: from February 1969 to February 1972 – Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Belitser, from February 1972 to February 1977 – Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR Maxym Fedotovych Hulyi, from March 1977 to December 1988 – Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR Valerii Kasymyrovych Lishko, from March 1989 to October 1992 – Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR Serhii Vasyliovych Komisarenko, from January 1993 to May 1998 – Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Heorhii Viktorovych Donchenko. In May 1998, after returning from a foreign business trip, the institute was re-headed by S. V. Komisarenko.

     The Institute's staff at the time of its establishment consisted of a director, two research staff, nine post-graduate students, one servant and one secretary. Scientific researches of this small scientific team were quite diverse, and the results obtained were very fruitful.

     At the beginning of 2019, the number of employees of the Institute was 278 people, including 156 scientific staff, of which 23 are doctors (among them 3 academicians and 2 correspondent members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) and 72 candidates of sciences.

     The Institute consists of 10 scientific departments: molecular immunology department (with 2 laboratories: cellular receptor immunology laboratory and immunobiology laboratory), neurochemistry, biochemistry of muscles, structure and functions of the protein, biochemistry of vitamins and coenzymes, chemistry and biochemistry of enzymes, signaling mechanisms of the cell, biochemistry of lipids, molecular biology, scientific and technical information departments.

     The structure of the Institute also includes specialized scientific centers (Center for the collective use of devices, Testing Biological Center, Permanent Tender Committee), as well as general scientific- technical and scientific-support units: vivarium of experimental animals; operational and technical department; economic service department.

     The Ukrainian Biochemical Society, which is an equal member of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) and the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB), operates on the basis of the Institute.

The main directions of scientific activity of the Institute are:

- research of structure, physical and chemical properties and biological functions of complex protein and supramolecular systems;

- studying the molecular organization of metabolic processes and mechanisms for their regulation by biologically active substances;

- development of biotechnology and nanobiotechnology for medicine, agriculture, ecology and industry.

Scientific research of the Institute is financed by the state from the budget of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, as well as from extrabudgetary sources – grants of domestic scientific programs, state orders, foreign grants.

At the Institute of Biochemistry, there is the Memorial Museum of O. V. Palladin, created in 1973 p. according to the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR. Exhibits of the museum cover the life, scientific and organizational, pedagogical and public activity of the founder of the Institute and world-known Ukrainian school of functional biochemistry. The O. V. Palladin Memorial Museum is actually the center of studying and promoting the history of biochemical science in Ukraine (the curator of the museum is PhD in biology V. I. Nazarenko).

In recent years, the Institute created a unique collection of hybridomas – producers of monoclonal antibodies for the diagnosis of hemostasis, tuberculosis, diabetes, pertussis and some other diseases.

The Institute of Biochemistry preserves the best traditions in the academic natural sciences, begun by the leading figures of Ukrainian biochemistry - Academician O. V. Palladin and his closest followers, who laid the foundations for the development of biochemistry in the 21st century, and today is the most recognized leader in this field.
